The Jeweler

A Guide to Jewelcraft

In my travels and quest for knowledge I have discovered many guides to Jewelcraft however none have been as complete as I would like or would wish. Some of those reeding this may find some of the information obvious but I hope most of it will be new and of great use. So please bear with me.

What is Jewelcraft? Jewelcraft is the creation of Jewelry as the name indicates however its not what one might expect. It is the combination of a metal bar, and a gem. In a Jewelkit which looks like a normal bag.

One thing that is very often found confusing is why the Jewelkit has four slots. From what I have discovered in the beta versions (that is the testing period) molds like in black smithing were going to be required. However, they were removed in the Alpha (or present game) and the extra two spaces were left in. To create any jewelry in the kit you must place one and only 1 bar of metal and 1 jewel in the top 2 slots of the Jewelkit. Do not I repeat do not place the Jewel & Bar of Metal in the bottom two slots.

Now that you know how to create items lets move on to how to get the items that make Jewelcraft such a valuable craft! There are 5 different types of metal bars used in Jewelcraft. Silver (the easiest), Electrum (harder than silver but easier than Gold), Gold (much harder but by far not the hardest), Platinum (once the hardest now replaced by velium), Velium (The hardest). Jewels are also on a difficulty scale. The easiest being Malachite and the hardest Blue Dimonds. I hope to compile a list that I will add to the page however you can find them at most of the major pages. These lists will tell you which gems become trivial at which level.

Jewelcraft works as every other skill or trade in EverQuest. However, Items become trivial as you skill goes up. To help with this skill take 20 points and put them all into Jewelcraft at your trainer. Then start with a Silver Bar and Malachite. Combine these until you get the "this item is trivial message." Then move up to the next gem in the merchants sale inventory. Do this until the gems cost reaches about 7pp, then move up to the next metal bar and start back with malachite. Only make the higher end items 60pp+ in price with enchanted metal bars and when the gem is trivial with the metal.

By now you may have noticed the items you create are just plain items, no AC (armor class) and no magic stats. How do you make the Jewelry that draws the big bucks? You have to use Enchanted metal bars. How do you enchant your metal bars? This is done by an Enchanter, if you are an enchanter than you need to purchase the enchant metal spell(s). If you are not an enchanter you can hire one to enchant your bars. Some will be willing to do it for free but others will ask a fee.

While it is very debated it is rumored that a high Wisdom and Intellect increase your success rate and how fast your skill goes up. If this is true obviously a warrior might be better at Black smithing than JC (or Jewelcraft). From personal experience i have come to believe that Lag effects your success rate. To minimize lag make your jewelry in a secluded spot with your spell book up. Also if you have had 3 failures it is usually best to stop and move around for a little while unless a skill much higher than your current one is required.

Due to the cost of high end materials I suggest moving to the next metal when your gems start costing 10pp. Obviously it is by far better to have 8 mess-ups and go up one skill level using 5pp stones and 3pp metal instead of a 5gp metal and 131pp stone. Some items are great however others are much less desirable. To get to the better items quicker and raise your skill faster buy and use unenchanted bars to make the jewelry then sell it back to the merchant for a small hit. Note: It is vary important to have a high charisma when buying and selling from merchants. If at all possible do it in your home town with Charisma boosting items on.

Things you MUST have. To make any Jewelery you must have a Jewel Kit, a metal bar and a gem. While the following are not ABSOLUTE must I would highly recommend them. A Crude Stein, +5 dexterity +7 charisma rings, and +7 charisma bracers. Try and get your charisma to around 100-120.

The majority of stones are sold from either a gem merchant, or the merchant you purchase your metals from. However, some such as a Black Sapphire, Dimonds, Blue Dimonds, Jacinth etc., are dropped by NPCs and usually sell for a lot more.

Suggested Prices: *Prexus Values as of 11-7-00*

Silver Ruby Veil +4 Str/+4 Wiz *175-200pp*
Silver Fire Emerald Ring +3 str +3 dex *100-125pp*
Silver Sapphire Necklace +4 intel +4 str *160-200pp*
Silver Star Ruby Ring +5 dex +7 char *125-150pp*
Electrum Ruby Ring +4 str +2 wiz *225-275pp*
Electrum Emerald Bracer +3 str +5 dex *125-150pp*
Electrum Sapphire Earing +4 str +2 intel *175-200pp*
Electrum Star Ruby Ring +5 dex +7 char *175-225pp*

These are my prices and the prices of friends. While they are not the cheapest on Prexus they are not the most expensive. It is very important to always remember and think of your fellow Jewelers. I believe that you should make 75-300% profit depending upon the item. Keep in mind that this may be profit but it is in truth paying for mess-ups and the risk of loss as well as your skill.

I strongly encourage all future Jewelers to respect others and the going rates! It takes just 1 jeweler to drive down jewelry prices. Sell intelligently 150pp of a Silver Ruby Veil is not only incredibly short sighted but also very inconsiderate. While it may sound greedy my prices are based on demand, trivial level and price. It costs me 131.5pp for a Ruby and 5gp for a silver bar. At 20pp profit for sale you will have to make 7 sales just to break even! Always remember that people are not only paying for the cost, and risk but also paying for the money it has cost you to achieve your skill.

I hope this helps you to get a great start and make some major money as well as some elegant and beautiful jewelry.
